Bridges
(après the Preludes and Fugues op. 87)

dedicated to Dmitri Shostakowitsch
for instrumental ensemble and female choir

"By building bridges into the future
we must take care not to burn
the bridges connecting today's culture
to its immortal past…"

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakowitsch

The sentence quoted above belongs to a letter written by the Russian artist to all the composers of the world, during the period he was composing the Viola Sonata.

It is, doubtlessly an expression that carries in itself a deep truth.
Every artistic creation, in a very close relation with its time, brings out a patrimony that goes beyond its own nature.
And every authentic artist finds himself in an intersectional point between an acquired heritage, his present and a future that he elaborates through an unique and personal path.

Dmitri Schostakowitsch conceived in an extremely short time, between October 1950 and March 1951, his Preludes and Fugues op. 87 after a trip to Leipzig where he participated to the anniversary of the two hundred years of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Texts from poets with different backgrounds who lived in diverse periods of the history of Russia. Akhmatova, Blok, Derzhavin, Khlebnikov, Krilov, Lermontov, Lomonosov, Pushkin, Soloviev, Tjutčev, Yazykov.

The first public performance was held in Petrozavodsk (Republic of Karelia, Russia), and its official premiere, on the 3rd of July, at the International Art Festival Andrej Sakharov, before a series of concerts to celebrate the jubilee of D. Shostakowitsch in 2006, artistic director Mstislav Rostropovich.

Bridges starting point is an elaboration of four preludes and fugues orchestrated for an instrumental ensemble and female choir. The texts chosen belong to some of the most outstanding poets and personalities of the Russian culture and literature.

The intermezzo is the core of the entire composition. I decided to put into music the words, quoted above, by Shostakowitsch. The Epilogue is worked out with all the subjects of the twenty fugues I did not orchestrate.

The symmetry of the whole structure represents the geometry that is inside my perception of a fugue. Because a fugue it is not a musical form, but a concept. It is as a circle, a perfect geometrical figure in which cannot be identified neither a beginning nor an end. I have always considered a fugue as a sort of an infinite outline. We are just witnesses of a certain point of the development of its boundless and never-ending existence. As we are a minimal component of the ceaseless and endless universe.

Lyrics
Prologue

Scythians

You are millions. We are hordes and hordes and hordes.
Try and take us on!
Yes, we are Scythians! Yes, we are Asians -
With slanted and greedy eyes!

O, old world! While you still survive,
While you still suffer your sweet torture,
Come to a halt, sage as Oedipus,
Before the ancient riddle of the Sphinx!..

Russia is a Sphinx. Rejoicing, grieving,
And drenched in black blood,
It gazes, gazes, gazes at you,
With hatred and with love!..

Come to your senses for the last time, old world!
Our barbaric lyre is calling you
One final time, to a joyous brotherly feast
To a brotherly feast of labor and of peace!

Alexander Aleksandrovic Blok, 30 January 1918

Prelude 11 in H

Bo-beh-o-bi, sang the lips,
Veh-eh-o-mi, sang the glances,
Pi-eh-eh-o, sang the brows,
Li-eh-eh-ey, sang the visage,
Gzi-gzi-gzeh-o, sang the chain.
Thus on a canvas of some correspondences
Beyond dimension lived the face.

Velimir Khlebnikov, 1908-1909

Choral I

הָיְתָה-לִּי דִמְעָתִי לֶחֶם,    יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה;

My tears have been my food day and night,
while they say unto me all the day: 'Where is thy God?'
As the deer panteth after the water brooks,
so panteth my soul after Thee, O God.

Excerpt from Psalm 42

Prelude 20 in C minor

I heard a voice

I heard the voice. It promised solace.
"Come here," it seemed so softly call.
"Leave Russia, sinning, lost and graceless,
Leave your land, pray, for good and all.
I'll cleanse your hands from blood that stains you,
And from your heart draw back black shame,
The hurts of failure, wrongs that pain you
I'll veil with yet another name."
With even calm deliberation
I raised my hands to stop my ears,
Lest that ignoble invitation
Defile a spirit lost in tears.

Anna Akhmatova, 1917

Intermezzo

By building bridges into the future
we must take care not to burn
the bridges connecting today's culture
to its immortal past.

Dmitri Shostakowitsch

Prelude 19 in E flat minor

Беспамятство, как Атлас, давит сушу;

A vision

There is an hour, at night, of cosmic silence.
And at that hour of miracles and visions
The vital chariot of the universe
Flies through the vault of heaven with abandon.
Then, like chaos, o'er the waters night doth thicken;
Forgetfulness, like Atlas, presses on the land;
And naught but god-sent vatic dreams
Disturb the muse's virgin soul.

Fëdor Ivanovič Tjutčev, 1829

Choral II

A girl sang in the church choir
Of all who are weary in foreign lands,
Of all the ships gone out to sea,
Of all who have forgotten their joy.

Thus her voice sang, flying up to the dome,
And a ray of sun shone on her white shoulder,

A girl sang in the church choir.

Alexander Blok, August 1905

Prelude 24 in D minor

God knows if I meandered in vain
Those many years in foreign lands!
My day of gloom's not brightened up,
No peace can I attain.
Sad, languorous, distressed,
I hasten to my family home
Just like a bird, in pouring rain,
That hastes to reach its cozy bush.

Nikolay Mikhailovich Yazykov, 1841

Epilogue

Мое бессмертно бытие;

God

Creator, I am your invention!
I am a creature of your wisdom.
O, source of life, bestower of blessings,
My soul and king!
According to your iron laws
My self eternal must needs pass
Across the borne of death;
My spirit's clothed in mortal garb
And I return through death alone,-
To your eternity - O, father!-

Gavrila Romanovic Derzhavin, 1784

На холмах Грузии лежит ночная мгла;
Мне грустно и легко; печаль моя светла;

Upon the hills of Georgia…

Dark falls upon the hills of Georgia,
I hear Aragva's roar.
I'm sad and light, my grief - transparent,
My sorrow is suffused with you,
With you, with you alone...My melancholy
Remains untouched and undisturbed,
And once again my heart ignites and loves
Because it can't do otherwise.

Aleksandr Sergeevič Puškin

Elephant and Pug

"Ho ho!" Pug says,
"That's just what I enjoy,
Since I can be a real tough guy
Without a single blow or bruise.
That way, the other dogs will say:
"To bark at Elephant this Pug
Must be a real strong mug!"

Ivan Andreyevich Krylov

But where, O nature, is your law?
Dawn breaks from out of northern lands!
Is this the home of our sun's throne?
Or are the icy oceans burning?
Behold, cold fire envelops us!
Behold, now day has entered night.

Why do these bright rays sparkle in the night?
Why does fine flame assault the land?
Without a thundercloud can lightning
Rise from the earth up toward the heavens?
How can it be that frozen steam
Gives birth to fire from winter's depths?

Regarding what lies right before us
Thine answer's full of doubts
O, tell us, how enormous is the world?
What lies beyond the smallest stars?
Are thou aware of all creation's end?
Tell us, how great is our Creator?

Michail Vasil'evič Lomonosov, 1743

The Eye of Eternity

Above white earth a single, single
Star burns
And draws one along a path of ether
To iself - there.
Oh, why is it so? In one steady gaze
All wonders dwell,
The mysterious sea of all life,
And the heavens.
That gaze is so close and so clear -
Behold it,
You, too, will be measureless and sublime -
Master of all.

Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov, January 1897
